Before Jack and Florence Lusted purchased it, Hy-Hope Farm was known as the Spencer Farm. The Spencers farmed the land for over 100 years, but not much is known about their family.
In 1975, Dave and Carol Bibb started farming the land, growing vegetables as well as hog farming. After their two children were born, they thought they needed something else to occupy their time. So on the 1980 Grey Cup weekend, Carol baked and sold their first pies on a small table at the end of their driveway. It was a major success!
Over the past 30, years Hy-Hope Farm has seen many changes from a folding table at the side of the road to a year round farm market. There’s something for every season, from fruits and vegetables in the summer, tobogganing in the winter and our year round freshly baked goods, jams and preserves.
And, don’t forget the 18-hole executive golf course. Another one of Dave’s wacky ideas turned into a fruitful endeavor.
Construction on the golf course began in 1990 when it was first known as Pasture Putt. Dave saw a program on television where a sheep farmer in western Canada turned his pasture into a golf course and became inspired.
The area where the golf course is was mostly used for growing crops, but was very hilly and difficult to farm. On a whim, Dave decided to turn under the crop, and Pasture Putt was born. It started out as a six-hole course with bumpy greens and gopher holes as obstacles. Now, Hy-Hope Golf is an 18-hole executive course with just over 3,000 yards of playing area and a challenging layout.
From the beginning we have been a family friendly place for parents to bring their children to learn how to play golf in a relaxed atmosphere. We value the idea of a place where people can learn how to play golf with little stress and pressure.
