Farm

Hy Hope ApplesHy Hope Farm started out as a small hog farm in 1975. Dave and Carol also grew corn that they took the local flea and farmer's markets. Over the years the farm has gone through many changes. The pig barns have been turned into cattle barns in which we raise shorthorn cattle. Shorthorns are considered one of the oldest heritage beef breeds in Canada. We now have a herd of 45 cows and calves.

All of our cattle are raised naturally on corn and grains we grow ourselves. Throughout the warmer months the cows and calves graze in the pasture land of the rolling hills of north Pickering.

We have also expanded on the crops that we grow. The ever expanding list includes:

Apples, Grapes, Pears, Plums, Cherries, Red Currants,
Black Currants, Gooseberries, Rhubarb, Potatoes, Tomatoes,
Squash, Onions, Cut Flowers, Herbs, Blueberries

Instead of commercial fertilizer we have created an on-farm composting program that naturally benefits all of the living things on our farm.

Over the years Dave and Carol have made many changes and new additions to the farm. In the last 30 years the face of small family farming has changed quite a bit but one thing still remains, the desire to bring the freshest products, from fruits and vegetables to baked goods jams and preserves, to our communities. From the beginning there has always been a plan at Hy-Hope Farm to do things differently to attract families to our farm to see the products we produce first hand and purchase them to take home with them.
